Nirmala Sadan is an institute dedicated for the education, research and rehabilitation of persons with Intellectual Disability and Learning Disability and is run by FraciscanClarist sisters in the Diocese of Kothamangalam. The Institute has a humble beginning with 8 children in a rent free building in the year 1985. Later it was shifted to the present site which was donated by the Bishop of the Diocese of Kothamangalam. The centre is located in Muvattupuzha-Thodupuzha route is 3 kms from Muvattupuzha town. The teacher training programme was started in 1990. At present the school and teacher training centre are functioning as separate units of VimalaMahilaSamajam, a charitable registered society (Reg. No. E. R. 175/76). The special school is funded by Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Govt. of India.

Nirmala Sadan has entered in the arena of human resource development in the year 1990 by starting the teacher training course Diploma in Special education. In the year 2003 the training college for special education, affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam was inaugurated. The teacher training institute is recognized by Rehabilitation council of India New Delhi. Courses are meant to prepare teachers to train children with Intellectual Disability and Learning Disability. Till now the institute trained 1100 teachers and they are working in various parts of Kerala, India and abroad.

Mission

Empower persons with Intellectual & Learning disability and their families through professional services, develop human resources to take care of the needs of these individuals from early intervention to vocational rehabilitation.
